Transport Research & Intelligence

Transport Research and Intelligence is a key academic Department of the Institute. The Department was created in 1993 as a Department of Research and Consultancy to serve as a hub for identifying issues in the Nigeria Transport and Logistics Systems as well as carrying out researches with the aim to providing solutions to transport and logistics issues and advising government and private agencies in the transport industry.

The Department was renamed Transport Research and Intelligence in 2013, after the creation of Consultancy Department, with an additional mandate to serve as Transport Intelligence Center for Monitoring Transport and Logistics activities in Nigeria and West Africa sub-Region.

We pride ourselves on the translation of our findings into easily accessible presentations and interactive visualization and with great emphasis on high measures of quality, efficiency and effectiveness.

Mandates

  • Conduct basic and applied and sustainable research on all modes of transport,
  • Serve as the Transport Intelligence Centre for the country,
  • Manage and operate the National Transport Data bank(NTD)
  • Communicate research findings to stakeholders for informed policy decisions and evidence-based planning of the transport sector,
  • Periodically evaluate transport plans and programmes and assist in transport policy formulation, and
  • Advise government on transport innovations and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Programmes deployment in the Country.

Functions Of Units

Research Unit

  • Identify research issues in transport and logistics sector,
  • Organize National Transport Research seminars and workshops aimed at addressing technical research issues in the Country,
  • Designing research methods and data collection instruments for the Institute Research projects.
  • Engage and collaborate with Local and International Stakeholders in conducting joint research,
  • Carry out sustainable and applied research projects that are significant to the socio- economic development of Nigeria.

Transport Data Bank

  • Warehouse and manage the National Transport Databank (NTD)

  • Provide Data Analytic services,,

Intelligent Transport System (ITS)

  • Timely and accurate collection of real time traffic data using variety of hardware like GPS, automatic vehicle identifiers, sensors and cameras,
  • Conduct Real time like traffic count, surveillance, travel speed, delays and vehicle weight monitoring
  • Provide Lab for Practical Training of Staff of the Institute and participants on the use of ITS technology and its applications,
  • Advise Federal, States and Local Government on deployment of ITS in all modes of transport,
  • Provide Technology for Improvement of transportation safety and mobility through the use of Advanced Communications Technologies.
