Students of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Zaria, may soon have a cause to smile, as the Institute is set to partner with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), in order to access student loans, a Government initiative meant to mitigate the financial challenges faced by indigent students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This was disclosed during a meeting between NITT and NELFUND officials who visited the Institute’s headquarters in Zaria, today.
The Director General/ Chief Executive of NITT, who was represented by the Director, Transport School, Engr. Remi Adewunmi, welcomed the initiative from NELFUND, pledging to key into the idea in order to assist students of the Institute with regard to funding of their educational pursuit.
In his remarks, the leader of the delegation and Director, Monitoring and Evaluation, NELFUND, Mal. Aliyu Muhammad, appreciated the DG/CE for the warm reception, while noting that the student loan scheme, which was a recent initiative of the present administration, is aimed at granting loans to students in state and federal Institutions in order to reduce the burden of tuition fees.
Speaking further, he stressed that “the loan is interest free and we have so far disbursed over 20 billion Naira to about 176,000 students cutting across about 157 institutions in Nigeria “
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Registrar, Dr. Maina W.A. Tarfa, appreciated the delegation for visiting NITT, promising to fast-track the necessary processes required to enable NITT students and trainees to benefit from the laudable initiative.
