The Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’id Ahmed Alkali, has directed the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) to set up Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centres across all 36 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative aims to promote the use of CNG as a cleaner and more sustainable fuel option for vehicles across Nigeria.
The directive was given during the 2024 NITT Management Retreat and the launch of the institute’s CNG conversion and training E-Booking system in Kaduna on October 8. The Minister highlighted the crucial role of the transport sector in driving economic growth, facilitating trade, and improving national connectivity. He emphasized that for the sector to achieve its full potential, it is necessary to adopt a Performance Management System (PMS) to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and alignment with national goals.
The Minister also called on NITT to continue positioning itself as a leader in transport research and training in Africa, and to focus on producing graduates who are equipped to be job creators and innovators. The rise of electric vehicles, autonomous transport systems, and sustainable green solutions were cited as developments that NITT must actively engage with, rather than just observe.
In line with this, the Minister urged the institute to ensure full commitment to the Performance Management System and its outlined goals, stressing that it would help measure progress, identify areas for improvement, and drive accountability across the organization.
Earlier, Dr. Bayero Farah, Director General of NITT, reiterated the institute’s dedication to spearheading reforms in the transport sector, especially in the wake of challenges posed by the recent removal of petrol subsidies. NITT has already launched CNG conversion centres in Abuja and Zaria, with further expansion plans in progress. This effort aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a more sustainable transport system across Nigeria.
NITT will continue working to establish CNG conversion centres in all 36 states as part of this initiative, further promoting cleaner energy solutions within the transport sector.
