The Director General/Chief Executive, NITT, Dr Bayero Salih Farah has called for greater connectivity between the various modes of transportation, namely: road, rail, inland waterways and airlines for improved and efficient transportation services in the country.
He made the remark on Tuesday, 13th February, 2024, at the 18th National Council on Transportation, holding in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Represented by the Director, Transport Research and Intelligence Department, Dr. Joshua Odeleye, the NITT boss in a paper titled ” the Role of Efficient Intermodal Transportation as a Catalyst for Economic Growth, ” defined intermodality as a process of transporting freight and passengers by means of a system of interconnected networks involving various modes of transportation in which all the component parts are seamlessly linked and efficiently coordinated.
Dr. Farah, who outlined the benefits of intermodal transport system to include on-time cargo delivery, reduced cargo handling, increased safety, cost effectiveness and energy efficiency, among others, also disclosed that the strategies for efficient intermodal transport development include the provision of intermodal transport facilities, policy and regulatory framework, stakeholders engagement and collaboration.
“In planning for efficient intermodal transportation, appropriate infrastructure and transport complementary facilities should be constructed for each mode, and operating costs should be reduced, ” he concluded.
Also in attendance on Day one of the annual event were the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Mr Oloruntola Olufemi; MD, Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Fidet Okhiria; Permanent Secretaries and Commissioners of Transportation from across the states; Directors in the Ministry of Transportation and other stakeholders .
