NITT Sensitizes NID Students On SIWES

NITT, Zaria

The Transport Technology Centre (TTC) of Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) has sensitised students in the National Innovative Diploma (NID) programme on the essence of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The event held at the Institute’s Headquarters in Zaria recently.

The Director, Transport Technology Centre (TTC), Dr. Danjuma Ismaila, stated in his opening remarks that the event was aimed at exposing and preparing the students for industrial work situations after graduation. His words: “We know that you have been exposed to classroom teachings as well as practicals; but you also need industrial application of that knowledge. So basically, that is the purpose of SIWES.”

He further noted that the SIWES programme was one of the academic activities to be carried out in the NID programmes; and that part of the requirements is for students to go for SIWES training outside the Institute.

Dr. Danjuma also said that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had approved more NID programmes for NITT, and that the Institute was waiting for the approval of eight of such programmes, which the Institute applied for recently.

Also speaking, the representative of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), who is also the SIWES Training Officer, Mr. Shirlu Simon Gogwan, stated that “the essence of the sensitisation is to bridge the gap between practical and theory.” He noted that students would be posted to different taining centres to enable them acquire practical industrial knowledge.

Other speakers who graced the occasion were the Ag. Registrar, Dr. Maina Tarfa, SIWES Accountant, Mr. Gomi Boman, amongst other dignitaries.
